ENERGY CONSERVATION
College campuses, as centres of intellectual power, are uniquely placed to affect a nation’s energy future. Campuses can set an example for their communities and the nation by implementing alternative energy, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability projects on campus to demonstrate their feasibility and cost effectiveness. As a responsible higher education institution, the college has embarked on including energy conservation activities in the education of the next generation- people who will be making energy decisions for years to come.
Scope
The policy shall render the guidelines for effective energy management and conservation in the college and will be applicable to students, staff, management and the local neighbourhood.
Custodian of the Policy
The implementation of the policy shall be the responsibility of the Energy Conservation Cell, under the supervision of the Principal, with the complete cooperation of the management, departments, students and staff.
Objectives
- To develop a proactive and progressive initiative to make campus interactions energy efficient, responsible, and cost effective.
- To implement high performance, long term projects on alternative energy sources and energy conservation.
- To ensure commitment to comply with applicable legal requirements and with other requirements to which the organisation subscribes which relate to its energy use, consumption and efficiency.
- To bring behavioural change in students, staff and management with regards to the use and conservation of energy.
- To create a culture of conservation and sustainability in campus.
Policy
- Conservation and minimal use of electricity shall be ensured.
- The existing Fluorescent Tube lights (T12 & T8) shall be replaced with LED lights.
- Old/ inefficient fans shall be replaced with BEE star rated ceiling fans, with service value 4.0 or above.
- It shall be ensured that appliances shall be Switched OFF, when not in use.
- BEE star labelled appliances shall be used, wherever possible.
- Standard Electrical wiring shall be used, to avoid energy loss.
- Old and obsolete appliances shall be replaced with energy efficient and environment friendly appliances.
- The existing Air Conditioners shall be replaced with inverter air conditioners, to get better energy efficiency. Proper maintenance and timely service of air conditioners shall be ensured.
- Computers shall be kept in sleep/shut down mode, when not in use.
- Regular cleaning of glass panes of windows, light fixtures, fans and other appliances shall be ensured to get maximum output.
- Use of natural light and ventilation, wherever possible, will be encouraged.
- Possibilities of using renewable energy solutions shall be investigated and steps shall be taken to implement the same.
- Solar panels shall be installed and used in the campus so that conservation and minimal use of electricity shall be ensured.
- Recycling and reuse of water will be encouraged. Rain water harvesting shall be implemented. Leaky and damaged taps water pipes will be repaired on a timely basis.
- Use of Electric Vehicles by employees shall be encouraged.
- Use of public transport shall be promoted among students and staff. Vehicle pooling shill be encouraged.
- Energy audit shall be done annually to evaluate and improve energy consumption status of the institution.
- Energy Conservation awareness programmes shall be organised by the Energy conservation Cell, to create awareness among the students & employees, about the importance and practice of Energy Conservation and to regularly monitor the energy conservation activities.
- Separate Biogas Plants shall be installed and kept functional at the College and Hostel and the energy thus trapped shall be effectively availed in running the kitchen of College canteen and Hostel.
