The department was established in 1968 with the commencement of under-graduate course. The PG course has been running since 1982 in the department. Since its formation the department is playing a vital role in the curricular and co-curricular activities of the college. There are seven faculty members out of which five are Ph D degree holders and three are possessing M Phil degree. One member has an MEd degree and two have qualified the U.G.C NET exam. Five members are recognised research Guides of the University of Kerala. More over, one faculty is a recognised Guide of KCHR. Dr. A. P. Greeshmalatha, Dr. G. Sreenivasan and Dr. A. Shaji have completed Minor Research Projects. Dr. A. Shaji and Dr. A. P. Greeshmalatha were granted KCHR fellowships for the revision of their PhD theses. Dr.A.Shaji has an ongoing Major Research Project of the UGC. The Department is a recognised research centre of the University of Kerala, and has always been in the forefront, of conducting regional and national seminars. The Department publishes an annual research journalHistoria with ISSN number, and has established links with Indian Council for Historical Research, New Delhi and Kerala Council for Historical Research, Trivandrum.
