Activities during 2015-16

Awareness programme on Cancer kids
  The Department of Commerce had conducted an awareness programme on “Cancer Kids”. We were blessed with the presence of Dr. Kusumakumari .P, Director, Professor and Head of Paediatric Department, Oncology, RCC, Trivandrum on 24th February 2015.
Entrepreneurship development programme
An Entrepreneurship development programme was carried out for our students by Dr. Sasikumar, Director, Co-operative College, Trivandrum on 4th March 2015. This programme was carried out to create an awareness of enterprise and self-employment as a career option for students  and to provide them with entrepreneurial skills  so as to encourage them to think out of the box
Spectrum 2015
  As a part of the seminar series “Spectrum 2015” organised by the college, The Department of Commerce was graced with the presence of Prof. (Dr.)G. Raju, Department of Commerce, University of Kerala on 7th March 2015.Our second , fourth and sixth semester students have presented papers on Recent Trends In Banking.
Book Bank Scheme
Book bank facility is provided to the needy and meritorious students selected by the committee which consists of teachers and students. Books are issued to students for the whole semester and taken back after the end of the semester examination.
Read a Business Daily
Students have to read the newspaper so that they get an exposure on what is happening in the world and bring to light information, issues or topics which aroused an interest in them in the field of business. Debates are conducted weekly on such topics.
Entrepreneurship club
  An entrepreneurship club was formed on 10 July 2015 which was inaugurated by Dr. Baiju Ramachandran, Former Chairman of ICSI Southern India Regional Council followed by a talk on ‘Role of Entrepreneurs in the Indian Context.’
Business Proficient 2015
An Inter-Departmental quiz competition, ‘Business Proficient 2015’ on 30th July was organised for the students of all departments. Each department had to send a team which consisted of two students. The quiz was conducted in two stages. In Stage 1 of the selection round, 30 questions were serially arranged and the students had to appear the questions within 20 minutes to get selection. The performance was evaluated on the number of correct answers and only 5 teams were nominated for the final round.  In Stage II of the Final Quiz, the top five teams which automatically qualified for the finals had to go through a  more challenging quiz to determine the top team.  About 50 questions were collected and serially arranged for the quiz programme related to the subject “BUSINESS”.
The results were as follows:
  • 1st prize: Chemistry Department – Kavya T V & Abin R B
  • 2nd prize: Economics Department – Abhinand Suresh & Muhammed Shiras B S
  • 3rd prize: Psychology Department – Aswantya S K & Akhil B S
Guruvandanam
Under initiative of the department, “Guruvandanam” was organised with the help of department alumni association on 15th August 2015. Former teachers were honoured by the principal, teachers and former students. The programme came to an end with a traditional lunch in the department premises.
Class PTA Meetings
  PTA meetings were conducted on class basis to have a better monitoring of academic and non academic matters of the students. Suggestions like repeat internal examination with fine for academically backward students were implemented by the department.   The Date of meetings was given below.

Academic Initiatives by the Department
The Department submitted a proposal to the UGC for two day national seminar on Social Entrepreneurship in India. (28-07-2015)
The department started subscribing two journals, The Management accountant and Bank Quest.
The department started subscribing a monthly news letter IIB Vision.
The department observed National Co-operative Week from 14th November to 20th November 2015.Conducted a programme “KNOW THE CO-OPERATIVE BRANDS” during the week.
Inaugurated Financial Literacy Club on 05-01-2016 by CA.Jose Zachariah, Chairman, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, Trivandrum Branch.

Jointly organised by Commonwealth Vocational University and Leelavati College of Commerce and Computer Studies, Pune.
Dr Soju S has Presented in absentia, a paper titled Corporate Governance-Provisions in the Companies Act 2013, in the National Seminar held at Govt.College, Nedumangad sponsored by Directorate of Collegiate Education ,Kerala on 18th,19th and 20th November 2015.
Ms.Swapna.O has submitted a minor project proposal to the UGC on 26-08-2015.The topic was Challenges faced by Rural Women Entrepreneurs in Trivandrum District.
Dr.Soju.S has attended Orientation Programme offered by the UGC-HRDC, University of Kerala in September 2015.
Ms.Lakshmi.A.J has participated in a National workshop on Research Methodology conducted by University of Calicut.
Ms.Lakshmi.A.J has participated in UGC sponsored National Seminar on Paradigm Shifts in Humanities organised by PG Dept.of English, SN College, and Chempazhanthy in Collaboration with CCS, University of Kerala.
Peer Teaching
Students were encouraged to identify topics for peer teaching and volunteers from the same class were selected for the conduct of the class. Classes were taken during intervals.
Department Alumni Association
A department alumni association was formed in June 2015 and two alumni meetings were conducted. Office bearers were elected from among the participants and resolved to formally register a department level alumni association.
Student Achievements
Aswin.S of B.Com S1 has won third prize in Elocution competition organised by Institute of co-operative Management, Trivandrum.
Krishnadas Sharma and Lekshmi.S.Shaji of B.Com S3 have participated in Elocution competition organised by Institute of co-operative Management, Trivandrum.
Krishnadas Sharma has participated in fancy dress and Mono act in the Kerala University Youth Festival held at Kollam.
Anjitha.B.Nair of B.Com S3 has won 2nd prize in Chanting Daivadasakom in Hindi, competition organised by Sree Narayana Dharma Sangom Trust, Varkala, on the 82nd Sivagiri Theerthadana Mahamaham.
Anjitha.B.Nair of B.Com S2 has won 1st prize in the Recitation - Hindi, competition organised by Sree Narayana Dharma Sangom Trust, Varkala, on the 82nd Sivagiri Theerthadana Mahamaham.
Lekshmi.S.Shaji of B.Com S3 won 2nd in the drawing competition – Vagmaya conducted by A J College.

XIII.Gateway to CA
In collaboration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, a career counselling programme called Gateway to CA was organised on 05-01-2016.CA.R Sridhar was the resource person. Students from other departments were also attended the programme.
Spectrum 2016
As a part of the seminar series “Spectrum 2016” organised by the college, The Department of Commerce was graced with the presence of Adv. S.Venugopalan Nair, Senior IPR & Corporate Lawyer. Our second, fourth and sixth semester students have presented papers on “Trade Mark and BrandingGrowing opportunities”.
Other Activities
For imparting social responsibility among students the department have taken the initiative for providing 72kgs of rice every month in Sukrutham, Trivandrum, to 14 cancer kids who are undergoing treatment and their parents who stay with them from January 2015 onwards.  The students had even collected excess amount in the month of March and provided them with rice for April and May as it was summer vacation. We had started this initiative so as to instil among students to discover their potential for action and change to motivate to seek resolution through individual and collective action.
Our students celebrated Onam and Christmas in 2015.Our students won 2nd prize in “Athappokkalam” competition.

Activities during 2014-15

Department Level Monitoring Committee Meetings for the students were conducted during this period to discuss the academic matters. The committee could do the internal examinations and prepare the CE sheets in time. Committee analysed the semester results also during meetings.
The Faculty also participated in the University Examinations as Chairman/ Chief Examiner/ Additional Examiner.
